Automotive Production Shifts Gears

3 Jun 2026

Frost & Sullivan’s latest "Automotive Production Trends and Insights, Global, 2026–2031" study highlights a global automotive industry in transition, driven by localization, shifting regional production, and evolving powertrain strategies.

Global light vehicle production reached 88.77 million units in 2025, with China accounting for approximately 37% of worldwide automotive production units and APAC leading SUV and crossover growth. As BEV adoption slows, hybrid vehicles are gaining momentum, reinforcing Toyota’s position as the world’s leading hybrid producer, while Volkswagen remains the largest ICE producer through its portfolio of high-volume brands.

The study also points to intensifying competition in China, where Geely Group achieved strong production growth as EV manufacturing scaled rapidly across its sub-brands, while automakers continue investing in battery technologies to strengthen long-term competitiveness.
