Saving Fawns with Drones and Thermal Imaging: The Safe-WilMA Project

Fawns are almost impossible to spot when they are hidden in tall grass. During mowing – when meadows are cut to produce hay and other animal feed – this can have fatal consequences for the young animals. The Safe-WilMA research project at Deggendorf Institute of Technology aims to change that.

The name is derived from the German phrase “Skalierbare Automatisierung eines fahrzeuggekoppelten Erkennungssystems von Wildtieren bei Mäharbeiten”, meaning “scalable automation of a vehicle-coupled wildlife detection system for mowing operations”. Using an innovative drone and camera system, the project aims to detect fawns automatically and save them from being killed by mowing machinery. Safe-WilMA combines high-resolution thermal imaging and precision cameras with a real-time interface for agricultural machinery. For our report, we spoke with Professor Dr. Markus Straßberger from Deggendorf Institute of Technology, project manager Pirmin Stöhr from SAM Dimension, and Dr. Matthias Rothmund from OSB connagtive.
