The 123-metre-long research building was put into operation in 2016 and houses a total of ten test facilities on more than 4,000 square meters of floor space, including an indoor test facility for crash tests and road tests, a drop tower, a laboratory for Car2X communication, a laboratory for research into safe energy storage systems, a simulation laboratory and a HiL laboratory. CARISSMA also has an open-air test area for complete vehicle tests, a driving simulator with hexapod motion platform and a pedestrian protection laboratory for the development of new testing and sensing methods. The aim of the facility is to contribute to increasing road safety in Germany and abroad through applied research. CARISSMA works together with car manufacturers, scientists and research institutes from all over the world. With their interdisciplinary research projects, the scientists are tackling the social challenge of “Vision Zero” - the long-term goal of zero road deaths. Currently, around 39,000 people are killed in accidents on Europe's roads alone every year.
