Driving Change: Interview with Le Hoang, CEO Vinfast D1

As Vietnamese electric vehicle brand Vinfast expands its global presence, we sat down with Le Hoang, a Vinfast dealer, at Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City. In this interview, he talks about his passion for drifting as well as the growing EV market in Vietnam. The interview was conducted by our guest author Ann-Katrin Klusak at Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City.

Ann-Katrin Klusak: I saw you drifting yesterday in the outdoor area with the VF3, the cute small EV Model of Vinfast. You really seemed to be into it!

Le Hoang: Yes, I am a passionate drifter and I am proud to work for the brand Vinfast, I wanted to for a long time already. I started off as a mechanic, then I worked as a used car dealer. Since the beginning of this year, I am having my own dealership not far from here in Ho Chi Minh City. The VF3 is the top selling car in Vietnam at the moment. 150.000 are driving around in Ho Chi Minh City, 300.000 in the whole of Vietnam.

Ann-Katrin Klusak: Are the cars only manufactured here in Vietnam?

Le Hoang: No, they are also manufactured in India, in Indonesia and on the Philippines as well as in the US we have distributors. We are very thrilled about that. There are six car models out there, I personally drive a VF 7. Vingroup is one of the largest conglomerates of Vietnam, focusing on technology, industry, real estate development, retail and services from healthcare to hospitality. As of 2022, the revenue of Vingroup and its subsidiaries was almost 1.1% of the GDP of Vietnam. Originally the company was founded in Ukraine on August 8, 1993 as Technocom.

Ann-Katrin Klusak: What about the infrastructure for EV Cars here in Ho Chi Minh City?

Le Hoang: We have around 500 charging stations in this city. Some on public roads, some under commercial buildings, under apartments and some at petrol stations. And there are more to come!
